Human Cataractous Lenses T a n w e e r Sarwat , M. A tau r Rahman* , and T. H. Kirmani b Departments of Biochemistry" and Ophthalmology. Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Karachi. Pakistan Z. Naturforsch. 43b, 1056-1058 (1988); received February 19. 1988 Human Cataractous Lenses, Nicotinamide Nucleotides Ratio, Senile Cataracts The ratios of reduced and oxidized nicotinamide nucleotides (NADH/NAD* and NADPH/ NADP + ) were indirectly determined at various stages of cataractogenesis by estimating the concentrations of metabolites (lactate, pyruvate and malate) of the lens. The ratios of NADH/NAD 4 and NADPH/NADP decreased significantly from immature to mature (P<.001, P< .05) . to hypermature (P<.001, P<.05) , to Morgagnian (Pc .001. Pc .001) and diabetic types (Pc .001 , P < .001) of cataractous lenses respectively. Ratios of nicotinamide nucleotides in diabetic lenses were lower in comparison to those of other types studied. As the opacity progressed, the ratios decreased with increase in blood glucose levels.

Copper levels in human mixed, nuclear brunescence, and posterior subcapsular cataract.
The study was undertaken to determine the copper content in different human cataractous lenses. The level of copper increased with increasing age in nuclear brunescence and mixed cataractous lens and a low amount of copper was observed in the posterior subcapsular cataractous lens with increasing age. Cataractous lenses of females have greater amounts of copper compared with males.
متن کاملQuantification of dolichol in the human lens with different types of cataracts
PURPOSE To quantify and characterize dolichol species in cataractous and clear human lenses. METHODS Whole lenses were collected from cadaver eyeballs from the C.H. Nagri Eye Bank and Red Cross Society Eye Bank (Ahmedabad, India). Cataractous nuclei were collected after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE). Wet weight for all the lenses was taken and were stored at -50 degrees C until use...
متن کاملHuman lens epithelium in normal and cataractous lenses.
Epithelial cell appearance and cell size were studied in intact, unfixed, and unstained human lenses. Ten normal and 24 cryoextracted senile or presenile cataractous lenses, all with subcapsular cataract, were examined. The cell size of the transparent normal lenses showed little variation. However, in the cataractous lenses, a wide range was found in mean cell size of different lenses and vari...
متن کاملPhosphoproteomics characterization of novel phosphorylated sites of lens proteins from normal and cataractous human eye lenses
PURPOSE Post-translational modification (PTM) of lens proteins is believed to play various roles in age-related lens function and development. Among the different types of PTM, phosphorylation is most noteworthy to play a major role in the regulation of various biosignaling pathways in relation to metabolic processes and cellular functions. The present study reported the quantitative analysis o...
متن کاملCrystallins in water soluble-high molecular weight protein fractions and water insoluble protein fractions in aging and cataractous human lenses.
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to comparatively analyze crystallin fragments in the water soluble high molecular weight (WS-HMW) and in the water insoluble (WI) protein fractions of human cataractous (with nuclear opacity) and age matched normal lenses to determine the identity of crystallin species that show cataract specific changes such as truncation and post-translational modifications. B...
